You’ve got your clothes packed, some personal items that you plan to decorate your room with, and you may have an idea as to what books you need to buy for your classes – but what else do you need to bring with you? Most first time college students don’t know what they should bring with them to college when they’re living on campus, especially when college is a long distance from home and one can’t travel back and forth too easily.

When it comes to packing, there are a few things that you should bring with you and a few things that you can leave at home. Below are just a few items that we feel you shouldn’t leave home without (and some you should).

What You Need to Bring

  • Alarm clock
  • Blankets
  • Mattress Pad (Twin Extra Long)
  • Sheets (Twin Extra Long)
  • Desk Lamp
  • Hangers
  • Key Chain
  • Pillows & Pillow Cases
  • Towels and Wash Cloths
  • Soap (Hand/Body and Laundry)
  • Flashlight

What You Can’t Bring

  • Halogen Lamps
  • Hotplates and Other Cooking Appliances
  • Microwave Oven
  • Candles or Incense
  • Pets of ANY KIND
  • Explosive Devices (e.g., Firecrackers)
  • Guns (real or toy)/Knives/Bows and Arrows
  • Bleach
  • Wax Warmers

Optional, But Often Useful

  • Wall Posters
  • Umbrella
  • Electric Iron
  • Shoe Rack
  • Bicycle
  • Camera
  • Laundry Bag
  • Small Coffee Table or Trunk
  • Recreational Equipment (The use of skateboards and hoverboards are prohibited on college property)
  • Refrigerator (No larger than 1.7 cubic feet or uses less than 10amps of energy)
  • Television
